Coping with memory loss

Lack of memory is often the first symptom of AD to appear, and the problem becomes progressively worse as the disease progresses. The memory aids listed below should help to overcome some of the practical issues surrounding memory loss in AD and can be applied as necessary throughout the course of the disease.

Use reminders such as lists, notes, calendars, clocks etc. – these may be the only aids needed in the early stages of the disease. In general, keeping to a regular daily routine can help reduce the effect of memory problems. Label people in photographs, and objects around the house, in order to reduce the frustration of not being able to remember a word or name. Label the doors of rooms with words, as well as pictures, to act as a guide for the person with AD. When wandering is a risk, make sure that the person has details of their name, telephone number, address and contact person sewn into their clothing or elsewhere on their person. Keep a recent photograph of the person on hand, in case they get lost and you need to show the photo to others who are helping to search for them.Constantly remind him/her of the day, month and year,as well as the current weather conditions. Exchange creative ideas with other carers, to help to reduce the stress of caring for a person with memory loss.
